studio scenes – encaustic painting process

I’ve been up to some fun stuff in the studio! There are several brand new encaustic series in development thanks to setting aside some time to play and explore. I spent some magical, early fall solo studio sessions melting, mixing, painting, torching-reminded yet again why encaustic painting is one of my most favorite mediums.

The first series I am sharing is Curio – 3 abstract, ethereal colorfields layered and laced with inlaid lines and circular forms that almost read as strings of light or beads. The process of carving, filling the design with wax, then scraping the excess away reveals a sort of static effect and subtle shift of colors in the underpainting.

Encaustics reproduce incredibly well in all different media so these will work beautifully as fine art prints on paper, canvas, direct prints on panel, metal, or even wallcovering and other “non traditional” applications. With direct prints in particular we also offer the option of adding a clear encaustic top coat. This gives the print an added depth and makes it almost indistinguishable from an original, so is a great option for achieving a luxe look without the cost of a full scale original. These will of course work beautifully as a series but also as standalone pieces as well.
