This large pair (64″H x 95″ each!) of flowy, sea-inspired sculpted paper beauties recently made their way to the Spa at St.Regis in Longboat Key thanks to our client Kevin Barry Fine Art. We are really excited about this technique we’ve been developing-we are able to transform heavyweight watercolor paper by pulling it through molten encaustic wax.

We first tested and refined the technique and design with smaller samples and then designed the layout for client approval with hand-drawn sketches, shown above.

It’s a tricky, messy, sliiiiightly dangerous process that results in this almost ethereal, sculptable, sophisticated material. Here we used it to create seaweed like tendrils accented by paperclay bubble and shell elements. We weren’t able to get good onsite pics yet but some on-the-fly pics from framing and install below!

There are endless possibilities with this technique-we can explore different subject matter, color palettes, and styles. Below are a couple of pictures of a smaller sample I am developing featuring jasmine and using tonal aqua/blue watercolors and we have more concepts in the works. We’d love to create a custom piece just for your project-as always-just reach out to chat, let’s make something beautiful!
