New Technique | Exploring Decorative Finishes

We are always game for a new challenge and recently had the chance to expand our skills while working on a custom “Cups” on panel commission for a high end residential project with the fab team at KTI.

They asked if we could create a custom faux finish for the backer panel for this Cups style commission-referencing the metal patina styles shown at the bottom in the samples below. Getting this layered, warm metallic finish was a process but so. much. fun! We created and then sent the top 2 samples for their review and once we had their approvals we were able to take it full scale for the final piece.

The finish was created through a process of applying layers of metallic bronze, gold, black and black through a range of methods-then carefully adding and removing partial layers and building up with thinner glaze layers until the just right patina emerges.
The effect is a beautiful, rich backdrop that worked beautifully for the mixed metallic paperclay cups applied over.

This is something we’re excited to keep playing with and are happy to explore further with you for your future projects-just reach out to discuss the possibilities!
